Brief summary of the History of Toowong Baptist Church.

From the mid -1870s, the Church of England Primitive Methodist Church and Wesleyan Methodist Church began establishing their churches in the Toowong district.  This trend inspired the wish of the Baptist families in the area to build a church of their own denomination close to their homes.  At the meeting held in May 1881, the Toowong Baptist decided to put their wish into reality.  Mr. William Richer was elected to initiate the ministry.

A block of land, where the present church premises is located, was bought and a small building with a seating capacity of 100 was erected on it.  Services were conducted regularly by Mr. Richer on Sunday morning for the first six months; soon after evening services also were held.  In June 1884 the congregation acquired the adjoining parcel of land and enlarged the existing church building to provide more seating accommodation and better facilities for the work of preaching the gospel.  By year 1905, the church was reputed as a “well appointed church with accommodation for 150 persons” (Brisbane City Council Heritage Citation “Toowong Baptist Church”- June 2000 Page.3)  

During the 1970’s, due to the increasing number of overseas students, Toowong Baptist Church (TBC) recruited a Chinese Pastor to start the Chinese ministry. By the grace of God, after 40 years of labour, TBC has changed and become a multicultural church. 

Entering the 21st century, we now have three congregations; International (English), Cantonese and Mandarin. With God’s blessings, our church has increased in membership and extra space was added in 2012 without the church needing to take out a loan.  Soon, God willing, another development will commence – to provide more room for our ever-growing ministry needs. 

道旺浸信會歷史簡介

在1870年代中期，英倫教會、循道會、衛理公會等教會紛紛在道旺區建堂，區內之浸信會信徒眾家庭亦銳意決定建立一間鄰近自己居所的浸信教會。遂於1881年5月舉行會議，決定建立教會，推選William Richer先生負責建堂。

教會購買了現址的土地(即教會現址)，即蓋建一間可容納一百人聚會的小教堂。教堂落成首六個月，每主日早上只舉行一堂崇拜，由William Richer先生主持；其後增加晚堂崇拜。1884年六月，教會再購入側鄰的土地擴建堂址，除增加坐席外，亦增添了其它設施，方便傳福音事工。到了1905年，道旺浸信會被譽為一間設備完善，、可容納一百五十人聚會的教會。 (Brisbane City Council Heritage Citation “Toowong Baptist Church”- June 2000 Page.3)  

於七十年代，由於海外留學生激增，道旺浸信會起用華人牧者開始華人事工。藉 神的恩典及四十多年的奮鬥，道旺浸信會發展成一間多元文化的教會。

進入廿一世紀，我們現在有三個堂會；國際堂（英語）、粵語堂及華語堂。藉 神的祝福，我們教會不單增長會友數目也於2012年在沒有負債下完成了擴建。在不久的將來，如果 神願意，將會有另一個發展以容納日漸增長的各個小組及其他事工需求。
